On a lazy day while watching Nigella's show, found interesting recipe and since then this has been a constant for our sweet cravings.
This recipe is something which I make when I am really low and chocolate makes everyone happy, right!! It needs very simple and basic ingredients which we have in our kitchen. So if you are in a lazy-lazy mood but still wanna have a delicious, comfortable, warm dessert, try this one. Also this is something which doubles up as a breakfast and dessert as well.
Have been making this gooey, chocolatey , heavenly dessert since 12 years now and I fall in love with it every time. All images uploaded here are from different years (2008- 2018) and by now you would have guessed why I haven't really got a chance to take step by step images or a proper picture of this heavenly dessert!! Its always a rush dessert for me and once out from oven, all I need is a spoon to dig in. And before I know it, its finished. I will make this soon and update step by step pics.

Updated step by step video

Ingredients:

- 250 gm stale/old bread(white bread is better) **
- 100gm(or more) dark chocolate chip - (optional)
- 3 eggs (For eggless version check Notes below)
- 40 gm or 1/2 cup light brown sugar or normal sugar coarsely powdered
- 500 ml full fat milk
- 2 Tbsp Dark rum (optional)
- Butter for greasing
Method:
- Pre-heat oven to 170 degree Celsius.Grease a pie dish or any oven proof dish lightly with butter.
- Put in the bread by just cutting it or tearing it into pieces.
- Put in chocolate chips all over the bread deep inside. Keep aside
- In another bowl whisk together milk, eggs and brown sugar , rum(if using)
- Pour this mixture into the pie dish and press down the bread so it can soak in all the liquid.
- Let it soak for about 20 min before baking.
- Put this straight into your pre-heated oven for 40 to 50 min.
- Check in between as different oven will have different time for baking.
- The pudding is ready when the custard has set and has a light gooey texture inside.
- I have tried this recipe with brown bread as well. But I must say that this recipe goes well with white bread. I also love using old croissants for this recipe
- And also best is to use old bread which is at least 2 or 3 days old. It does make a lot of difference in the texture.
- If its not stale or old enough you can keep it open in fridge or outside on a wire rack for few hours before using them.
- Brown sugar gives it a different taste than normal white sugar. But if someone doesn't get it, normal sugar can be used.
- If you don't have chocolate chips handy, you can just use a normal chocolate bar and chop it into small small pieces and use. Chocolate chips are optional.
- You can also ad raisins instead of chocolate chips. Anything you please.
- If you do nt eat eggs, do not worry, you can still make them. Just make these with custard powder instead. Make the custard with milk and sugar like you would normally do or as instructed on the packet. 2 to 3 tbsp for 500 ml should be ok. Boil all till its smooth and creamy and still a bit runny. Do not make it more thick. And pour this onto the bread.
- The Original recipe demands for 1 tbsp rum to be mixed. I usually don't add but it does give it a nice flavour. Do add if you wish to.
- You can also make these on a stove top. Just add some water in a steamer and keep these for steaming for atleast 50 mins or until the custard is completely set and cooked.
Do post pics as well if you enjoy making these.
